Dulwich Picture Gallery is the oldest public art gallery in England and was designed by one of Britain’s most acclaimed architects, Sir Joh Soane. The architectural jewel of Saone’s design is the Mausoleum, a dramatic and atmospheric interior at the centre of the gallery. The mausoleum had suffered from the wear and tear of its life as busy gallery and the existing decorations looked dated.
Hare & Humphreys carried out paint analysis to establish any evidence of the original colour scheme which then inspired the new scheme based on subtle shades of stone colour. The faux porphyry columns had been cracked and damaged over the years and previous attempts to touch up the decoration had left them looking patchy. Hare & Humphreys carefully removed the later interventions, repaired the damage and refreshed the finish.
