Japanning / Lacquer
At the forefront of architectural decoration and conservation, we are proud to offer expert services in Japanning and lacquerwork, techniques that epitomise elegance, craftsmanship, and historical depth. From delicate period pieces to bold contemporary applications, our work reflects a commitment to the artistry and integrity of these highly specialised finishes.
What Is Japanning?
Japanning is a European decorative technique developed in the 17th century to imitate Asian lacquerwork. Traditionally applied to wood, leather, or metal, Japanning involves building up multiple layers of varnish—often tinted black or red—followed by hand-polished finishes and intricate detailing, sometimes incorporating gold leaf or painted designs.
Lacquerwork for Interiors and Furnishings
Lacquer, whether traditional shellac-based or contemporary synthetic, offers a lustrous, hard-wearing surface that enhances both durability and aesthetic richness. From walls and ceilings to fine joinery and furniture, our team expertly applies and restores lacquered surfaces to suit both historic restoration projects and modern decorative schemes.
Expertise You Can Trust
Our craftsmen are among the most experienced in the UK, with decades of combined knowledge in historic surface decoration. We work closely with architects, interior designers, and heritage bodies to ensure every project is executed with precision, authenticity, and sensitivity to the building’s context.
