Filming at The Cottier Theatre, Glasgow

Posted on Tuesday 21 August 2012

Dowanhill Church, Glasgow, was completed by William Leiper in 1865 and given a striking polychromatic scheme by the Glasgow-born designer and artist Daniel Cottier in 1866. Working for the Four Acres Charitable Trust, Hare & Humphreys have been commissioned to undertake major conservation and restoration work to the interior.

The full scope of the work included stripping layers of overpaint from the original decoration, touching in damage where damp had attacked the plaster, reserching the original scheme, mixing colours, and re-creating it entirely on the walls of the church. Historic Scotland were keen to record the work, and a film crew were dispatched to record the team at work cleaning, stencilling, lining, retouching and graining. The team leaders spoke to the crew about the technical challenges of the project, and Director Cathy Littlejohn spoke about many of the decisions made by the project team.

The work is being documented for the production of  a new publication to follow up Historic Scotland's previous book, Cottier's in Context: Daniel Cottier, William Leiper and Dowanhill Church, Glasgow, which can be purchased from their website.
