trompe l'oeil

A trick of the eye is the literal translation from French of trompe l'oeil - painted illusions which fool the viewer. A balcony, or veranda opening on to a verdant garden, architectural details such as false mouldings and columns, or a ceiling covered by scudding clouds. Intricately painted deceptions have been popular since the Renaissance. Trompe l'oeil creates a sense of space and light to enhance solid architectural form.
